If there is a place to mount them (tall fence around the field or maybe get 2 assitants with monopod/lightpole holding strobe), wouldn't it be great to have say 2 AB800s powered by vagabond and shoot from end zone with platers coming at you? Adjust power using radio popper JRx as play comes closer.

Just a thought.

This is interesting reading...

For the shots above and below, I used two heads and set the power for 800 Watt Seconds (WS) instead of 1200WS to avoid frightening people or getting in trouble with game officials.

The nice stadium officials let me put my strobes on the filming deck of the press box at a standard high school stadium. With all these variables mentioned above, I could have gotten f/4 at 1/500 on the field at 800iso. I didn't really trust how it looked on the LCD, so I chose a setting on the safe side (f/2.8 at 1/250th).

WOW! That really lights up the field. I wonder how that would fly at a football game however. There would be folks in the press box scouting, as well as folks filming from the film deck. I wonder how it would impact them.

What if a spectator turned around to look at the press box just when 'the beast' went off? And it blinded the fan!!!

Holy crap, this is instant daylight!

Does anyone know the typical light output (ws?) emitted by a lightning bolt?

I think it is less then the beast puts out Clarence! What about the fans on the other side of the field? I would imagine that would be quite annoying to anyone sitting on the other side of the field.

I have seen that article about the "beast". I was thinking something simpler but yet lot more powerful than my 550ex.

They wouldn't even notice. It wouldn't effect them at all.

Bobby, this is something I've pondered myself. I've though about mounting my AB800's to the light poles in one of the endzones. The only problem I see is that your shooting opportunities would be greatly diminished.

I like the set-up of "The Beast". That would allow you do shoot most of the action.

I'm sure the game videos would be peppered with these large flashes of light each time the beast was activated. The people themselves unaffected.

No different than college or pro basketball. The people watching the videos won't even notice them. Unless they're a photographer and looking for them.

I remember last year when Duke played UNC in basketball. There were strobes going off about every second when there was no action and it was almost constant when something happened. I mentioned it to my wife and brother-in-law and they just went "huh?".
