Thinking of trading in my XSi for a 50D at Adorama...your thoughts?

Well, it didn't take too long, but I've already been bitten by the upgrade bug. I'm gonna check with Adorama about trading in my equipment (mint XSi body w/ low clicks + OEM mint condition Canon BG-E5 grip) for a 50D, either new or refurb'd. As mentioned, everything is minty fresh, with very low click count.

What do you guys think a reasonable trade-in value would be?

Basically, I love the feel of the 50D and want a camera I can grow into for many years to come; sure I'd love to get a 7D, but I'd rather spend the difference in cost on good glass. With the XSi, I know the camera can produce stellar images, but I feel like I'd grow out of the ergonomics and body build pretty soon.

Thanks.

Much like trading in a car, you're not going to get near as much as if you had sold it yourself.

you can check the buy/sell listings for a reasonable price but realize, Adorama will give you a "low ball" price and more importantly, the larger and heavier (but better "ergonomics") will not get you better pics !

That's pretty much what I'm expecting, but I still want to entertain Adorama's offer since it would be the easiest scenario. Should be an interesting phone call when they contact me tomorrow.

AudibleSilence, I think I'd entertain $625 if that was offered to me by them...Still taking a hit, but not too bad...

Will let you guys know how it goes. Thanks.

You have a kit lens and a nifty fifty. The 50D is really not where you should be directing your focus.. Glass glass glass.

The number they quote you is the number they'll sell it for - they'll pay 70% of their resale value, so if they quote you $625 you'll see $437 of it.

Absolutely. I understand I won't become a pro with a body change. As I mentioned earlier, the XSi pics are absolutely spectacular...I just find the body a bit small and not so comfortable. After trying a 50D with the scroll wheel and heavier weight, it feels infinitely better in my hands.

With that said, if I get too low-balled, I'm not gonna do it for the sake of upgrading. I'll hold on to my XSi and keep it as a backup when I eventually upgrade. The XSi has been and still is a FANTASTIC camera.

Not sure if I understand completely--so wouldn't they quote me $437? Or would they say, we will pay you 70% of whatever we sell it for eventually?

I agree...it's just that I wish I had a camera that felt better in my hands...the upgrade won't be definite...just something I'd do if it doesn't end up hosing me in the end.

A $60 grip off of Ebay will help with the "feel" tremendously.

I upgraded from an XT to the 50D so that was a big jump. I'm overall very happy with the camera. I do feel like the exposure is a little less forgiving but that may just be because I'm peeping at so many more pixles. I see a lot of noise even at low ISO if I fail to expose to the right. I also had to go to a beefier ballhead on my tripod because of the weight of the camera.

I love the ability to customize the camera for my shooting style and the faster FPS has been useful also. The high definition screen is also very useful. If I had it to do over again, I would have kept saving and went for the 5DII instead.

No, they'll quote you a figure, say 625, and then tell you that they'll pay you 70% of that. They quote what they're going to list it for because then you hear a bigger number and are more likely to take the deal even though the pay to you is only 70% of what they quoted.

LOL...now I'm really looking forward to this call...thanks for the heads up.
