Hi everyone,

Picked myself up a 300mm f/4 L IS yesterday. I used to own the non-IS version of this lens, as well as the 300mm f/2.8 IS version, and the 100-400L. What struck me is how noisy the IS is on this lens when it first kicks in. It sounds like someone dropping a dime into a tin bucket! I have heard that the IS on the 300/4 L is noisier than most, but does this sound about right? (No pun intended :)).

Normal. The IS generation on the 300 f4 IS is relatively old, and it does do a little "clunk" action upon activation. No worries, enjoy the terrific lens!

i've owned the lens twice. the first copy was excellent but the second one had inconsistent focus.

According to this http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=1 (external link) the 300mm f/4.0 has way better IQ then the 100-400mm at 300mm and f/5.6.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Mine seems to agree with Patrick's statement. However, I was quite concerned by the IS noise after the first use. I relaxed only after I searched POTN and found out from members that it was normal.

My new 70-200 f/4 L IS is noisier than the other IS lenses I have, other than the 70-300 IS, which has a similar shape.
