I believe they are implying that the nikon was making a racist remark about how asian people have squinty eyes.

If the future of cameras is the camera telling me whether it thinks i blinked or not, i'm officially scared.

When my 5d Mark IV N says to me with an english accent "aaron i do say, i think your image is slightly under exposed and ought to better adhere to the rule of thirds" then i will be scared and may have to get back into older technology.

And now in reference to the thread, well that's nikon for ya :p JK! It just goes to show how we shouldn't trust our cameras and let us do the work, as opposed to the little green box!

I could afford a whole line of fancy equipment with the film frames I wasted because some family member had their eyes shut at the moment it clicked :~( Of all the fancy features some new cameras offer nowadays: this is the one I would pay to have in my EOS 3 ...

Discovery is not accidental. We discover only when we make ourselves ready to receive and photographers seek discovery by mastering their craft. But it begins somewhere else. It begins with daisies, kids, awful scenes, falling in love, or growing old. It begins with that which matters to you. And it ends with visual statements that express what matters to you about these things. It is not sight the camera satisfies so thoroughly, but the mind. - Christian Molidor

But it could only have existed on a digital camera which provides a means for examining the image...but there is already the LCD view which gives the photographer an ability to examine much more than eyes. This does not strike me as a worthwhile feature...and I suspect a lot of photographers of Asians will turn it off.

But it does make you wonder about the logic of spending R & D time on it and then incorporating it in the camera.

Not at all.

The reason for spending R&D time is not because there is a strong need, but because we buyers do compare feature lists, and choses the unit with most impressive list.

Now, you may have enough knowledge to make an educated decision about your need for this feature in the camera. But when you go out buying a car, or a stereo, or a multi-media player, or a mobile phone, ... you will now and then make a decision based on such a feature list.

* Some people buys things just because of an extra bullet on a feature list.
* Some people buys things as toys - then they busy themselves with the extra features and ignores the main feature of the product - like we tend to do with our cameras - pixel peeping instead of being out taking pictures :)
* Some people just grab something to buy.

An extra features isn't automatically good to have. And it may not even work in real-life use. But a manufacturer still have to spend a significant amount of time adding new features just because lack of features will make them lose more customers than they lose from having one extra (and possibly borked) feature.

On a related note, I thought that the facial recognition on the new Canon P&S cameras was a gimmick. I just bought a SD780IS, and the feature works great - I wouldn't want a point and shoot without it now! Go figure....
