I just got done shooting a long exposure on a car. It was done in my back yard on an impulse so the background is not thought out or anything so please leave comments about that out. I know that it isnt very good but these are only my first two exposures trying this. I am definitely going to keep trying as they make for really cool pictures when everything is executed correctly as seen here (external link). I just wanted to post them here to see if anyone has done this and if they have any tips.

I've played with painting with light using a flash as well as flashlight and spotlight. Even gone as far as cutting colored glass to fit over the lens of the light. The difficult thing to overcome is the image of the flash showing when you light the far side of the car as the light source is distracting. Cloning may fix it. I would say its not necessary to light the opposite side of the car which will eliminate the flash being seen in the image. As for eliminating the light source in the rest of the image I recommend using your body to hide the flash from view of the camera. I may even go as far as using a piece of black foamcore with a hole just the size of he flash head cut in it as a shield. A small softbox may work too. Dark clothing will help hide you. Here is a link to a Youtube video on painting with light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMpRP7aYNtg (external link)

Hope this helps,
Paul

Thank you for the info, I will have to try some of those things out the next time I do this, I will also have a more thought out scene, I do want to keep the star effect of the flash. I will just have to make it more consistent
