I couldn't find much about this, but how do I get those nice vivid blue skies. I'm not sure if DPP is what I should be using for this, as I am still learning how to use it, but if anyone could tell me how, maybe even show me step by step on what to do to make my skies look nice, I would really appreciate it.

Try using the Landscape picture style for starters, that helps to saturate blue skys. There's also a downloadable picture style called Clear IIRC which may help too.

Edit; I'm assuming you're shooting Raw?

Got a polarization filter? That'll help a lot for the before shots. If your skies are a bit blown out, it can also help to use a GND filter. Sorry, no answer for DPP :p

To darken the sky relative to the foreground needs software that supports layers. The prepararation work can be done in DPP, but assembly and final teaks need a post processing programme.

Agree. The pics you are seeing with rich, blue skies and possibly nice contrasty clouds with detail in them may have actually been produced in-camera with a polarizer.

Agree. No way to do it in DPP as far as I know. Need to do some post work which involves masking/selecting of the sky and using layers.

Here's a quick comparison of how the different picture styles affect the blues in DPP:

Clear looks really OTT IMHO.

That's a very cool illustration, Electric! It'd be interesting to compare it to an identical set done in LR or ACR with the new calibration presets and comparative contrast/saturation/sharpening settings.

OK, here's a quick comparison, both ACR on the left and DPP on the right with default settings:

Thanks for that René, forgot that [I guess the screen cap applied my monitor profile?], original image should now be sRGB!

Thanks, Electric Shepherd! It looks good, in fact, I prefer the ACR output!

ACR stands for Adobe Camera Raw. It is the Raw processor used with Photoshop CSx and, in a stripped-down form, Elements.

Lightroom has the same "engine" as ACR underlying its integrated interface. ACR and LR provide very advanced tools in Raw processing.

Landscape picture style is awesome with the right image. I use a circular polarizer to boost the blue and then the Landscape picture style will boost it even more.

I downloaded the Clear picture style from Canon a long time ago, but I hardly ever use it -- it adds too much contrast. I do find that Clear is very nice for black and white images.

What's with the 'clear' option?

I can't find it on my version of DPP (which I think is the latest one).
