Whoa... gorgeous. Look at the dirty flying and the crispness of the driver's eyes...

Impressive detail on the face. And all this time I thought the phrase "don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes" was an American thing...

Wow...I'm shocked. Something actually useful on dp...;)

I was a bit disappointed that it didn't receive much attention. It still contains some small omissions that I will correct once I have the 7D in hand and had the time to check first hand on these matters. One area that I am most interested is how the howto's by Chuck Westphal on the 1D Mk.IIn and 1D Mk.III with regards to the custom function setups for different types of situations apply to the setup of the 7D AF system - most (if not all and then a bit) of the settings that matter in this area are available...

Yeah, that fact that almost all of the Cf's are in the 7D is very intriguing and would possibly mean the AF is actually closer to the 1DMKIII than originally anticipated, and then some, as you mentioned. (Spot AF for instance...)

Very impressive camera and nice to see some real life photo's to compare.
Im considering upgrading from my 40d and this camera i am thinking about for motorsports. Any jpg shots straight of the camera. Dont mean to sound rude, was there any editing on those shots apart from the boarder.I in two minds as to a 7d or 1dmk3.

Believe it or not, today's strong sun wasn't ideal for testing a camera with a long telephoto lens. Heat haze rising off the track plays havoc with the images.

You can see it for sure in a few shots, almost looks like bad blurring :)

Positive info usually does not receive much attention on DPReview.

Wait till someone encounters an AF issue, and you post all that info again...

Simon, great shots. Just looking at them, clearly the photographer played a big part in the results, but nonetheless we should both be thankful that the shots turned out well-exposed, with vibrant colours and most importantly, spot-on AF.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Canon software is totally hopeless and always will be.

Geoff, this statement baffles me and I beg to differ. Although DPP lacks options, I've always found their converter to be fantastic (and I'm not the only one here). For punchy results with accurate colours, I've always preferred DPP as the first-choice, as opposed to ACR. Let it be known that I wish that wasn't the case, since ACR offers so much more control than DPP. Each to their own..

BIF with a strong background sunlight will be a good AF test. Do some sequential shots and see how many are tack sharp.

Excellent photos Simon. I think these are better than a brick wall, a chair and then some!! Thanks for posting these! :) I can't wait till Canon puts this new AF system in the next 1D MK IV. :D

it's instant with ebay and if you use paypal.

Not always, sorry. I have done about 50 of these ebay/BIN auctions, and it is pretty random as to when it is instant and when you have to wait.

Beautiful shots Simon, great job in panning and tracking besides the 7D helping you!

Shots look really good. I think this will be the crop sensor camera to beat, at least for a few months anyway.

Motorsports isn't a great test of the AF though. Football, soccer, low light sports, sports with start/stop type of movement and varying speeds and acceleration and random movement really test the AF.

I'm betting Canon got it pretty good in the 7D. If I hadn't bought and been exposed to 1D body goodness the 7D would certainly be on my buy list.
