Hello,

I was wondering if it was worthwhile to invest in a L lens for a entry level DSLR camera such as the Canon Rebel XT/350D?

Any experiences from Rebel owners?

The lense makes the camera.

There's no difference in image quality between pictures taken with the 350D and 20D if they both have the same lense (even a 1D?). An L lense will only make it better.

Definitely worthwile to invest in good lenses. You will be able to see the difference right away (even if you are a beginner). Please note that although most L seems to be good, there are also non L and third parties lenses which are good lenses (such as the Tamron 28-75 XR Di).

I use to have a Canon 75-300 USM II. The results were very disappointing. I started to get the results I wanted with a 70-200 F4 L (and also.... after practising and reading some books about proper exposure). hope that helps.

my next lens will be 70-200 2.8L :o

No doubt. Go for the L, you'll never regret. As other have already said, remember that the most important part of the whole kit is the lens. You can have a 1D any model but with a crappy lens what you will have are only (in terms of quality, not artistic) crappy pics. OTOH, with a great lens, even a crappy camera can give excellent results. And BTW, the XT is NOT a crappy camera :D

My philosophy is to get good lenses and be a bit "cheap" on the body. In a year or two I'll upgrade to a better body, and I'll then have great lenses to go with it. Have one "old" L-lens now and will hopefully get another this summer when my buddy has found his wide angle lens he wants. :D

thanks guys!

I wanted to ask this question because the guy who i was going to buy the L lens from told me it is better for me to get rid of my 350D/XT and invest in a 20D!

As u all probably know by now i have a EFS 17-85 IS and EF 100mmm f/2.8 Macro lens. Which L lens is a good one to start off with (not the 20-700 IS since i am saving that for later when my experience is better)

1. 17-40mm f/4L
2. 16-35mm f/2.8L
3. 24-70mm f/2.8L

I was leaning towards buying the 24-70.

thx
Dave

Yes, the XT will really love any L lens. ;)

My ol' XT loved it whenever I had the 70-200 f/4 on it.

The XT loves L. So do all the other EOS cameras. L does not make the photographer nor does it make the picture. You make the picture, L glass just makes it better. You seem to have covered the short in your 17-85 and the fixed in your 100. So why not the 70-200 in either the F4L which is very affordable or the 2.8. It really depends on what you will be shooting.

It always amazes me that they feel that their cameras are not "worthy" of high quality lenses. My Rebel takes every bit as good of pictures as any 20D any day. The 20D has more flexibility - but in most cases - not better photos. Invest money in lenses - they will hold their value much better than bodies!
