So, this was the first legit skate sesh in a while. I just had to take the opportunity for some photos, haha. Here are some results...

1. bs crook to fakie

2. bs tail

3. bs boardslide, warmup. Soon afterwards we just left because it was getting too dark

4. And for this one, I tried doing a sequence, but for every frame, my 2 285hv's would become less powerful. So I had to up the contrast on the subject to somewhat match lighting. I probably should have spent more 2 blending in the frames better...

man, love the shots, the lighting with sunset is perty :)
to bad the flash lit up the concrete, would have been sick just the bench in darkness with that background

Haha, thanks guys. I guess I could've set up the flash to light just the bench, since I have a home made grid, but the purpose to light it up was to show where the obstacle was located. It is pretty much mandatory in skate photography to show where the skater comes from, and where they are going to land. Otherwise it would just be a regular bench grind. The slope adds difficulty.

Nice idea with lighting the bank, although I would've preferred more of it lit. A rimlight would've been nice on all of these.

Ya, too bad I don't have a 3rd flash for that, haha. I plan on getting a 3rd flash by the end of the year, or early next year. Thanks for the comments though!

I wanted to ask you guys how you are syncing off camera flash for sports? I have been photographing skateboarding since the film days, but have just recently started using OCF and am confused on how to combat the 250/s shutter speed limitation of syncing with a flash. Can someone explain how this works?

By the way...sick shots!

Thanks,

-Dave

Well, 1/250th is enough to keep the action still on OCF. 1/250th has always been fast enough for me to freeze action for skateboarding, even when I used as much as only 1 flash. I don't think it is until below 1/160th where you start to see unwanted effects.

Use short flash duration to freeze motion
