Hello,

A friend of mine is after buying a new camera, I have told him to get a canon maybe the 450d only because its what I have haha.

Anyway he is interested in the Nikon D5000 which he has also seen.

The question is, Which one would you buy and why?

Thank guys.

Both are capable and both have their shortcomings. If he's going to stay with a pretty basic system then it doesn't really matter. However, if he is intending on buying a lot of gear he may want to put a spreadsheet together of what he sees as his final desired system and compare what's available from both sides and the total cost.

Once you start looking at pro quality lenses Nikon can get pretty expensive.

I'd persuade him to get the 450d so you guys can have common topic, share lens, etc.

The D5000 is a pretty nice camera and has some features that trump the 450 such as movie mode and a tilting LCD and there are lots of advantages in having a shooting buddy with a different format. It makes for some good discussions and you get to compare gear head to head. But if you want to steer him toward Canon, suggest at least the 500 as it too has movie mode.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
