We have a new baby in the family, who I look forward to photographing. See lens list below. Would there be any advantage in acquiring a 50mm lens?. Thinking in particular of sharpness.

I guess it all depends on what camera you plan on using.

I'd pick from the Canon EF-S 17-55 IS f2.8 or Canon EF24-105 f4. And you'll probably be shooting around 35-45mm on a crop. Realistically, I'd choose the 17-55 over the others because of the extra stops. The better your lens can shoot in low light the better the outcome, IMO. Considering most newborns aren't going to be keen on bunches of lights in his/her face. I feel you will get better reactions/expressions with a wider f-stop.

Bere in mind that I don't have any experience with the Canon EF100 f2.8 Macro, so I may be way off base here. And honestly, I would of picked the Canon EF70-200 L IS f2.8, due to the IQ; however "room to shoot" may be your biggest contender if you chose this lens. But, if you are using FF, then you may be able to pull it off.

I can and will say .. The 50mm 1.4/1.2 are awesome and has done me good so far with baby/infant shoots. But, will it be worth the cash? Couldn't answer that one. You already have that range covered, so ... That's all you. ;)

Hope that helps.

I would definitely get a 24-70 L or the other zoom mentioned. Right now te baby isn't moving much but watch out once there mobile. You will need a zoom then otherwise your will wear yourself out running around.
