My wife has an Canin IXUS 50 camera, and the camera has stopped because of flat battery a couple of times and taken her by surprise, I suggested she look at the battery monitor,
we charged the battery and there is no Batt Monitor shown on the screen , according to manual should be on Top Left hand side
is there a hidden option to show or hide this Batt icon from the display??

I don't have an IXUS 50 but have the IXUS 60 which I suffers from the same problem.

When the battery is fully charged there is no battery indicator. There is just a low battery indicator which only seems to come on when you have about 4 shots left, which isn't particularly useful.

You may be able to work round this using the CHDK firmware which I think gives you a decent battery indicator, but I haven't tried this on my IXUS 60 so don't know for sure.

Luckily I've got two batteries for mine - the spare came from the IXUS 40 that I had previously before it took a bath.

CHDK provides a great battery indicator plus shutter speed and f stop display before you shoot, and it works on the SD400 (IXUS 50)
