Sorry but I've been reluctant to post crops of my 70-200 and now I need to know if this level of sharpness is normal for a 70-200mm non-is. I very rarely shoot at 2.8 because I don't believe I have a good copy. It's usually F4 or higher. These are approximately 100% crops. Thanks for your help even though you may be sick of these threads.

For 100% crops, they look OK to me. How do they compare to your 24-70 ?

Not close, at 2.8 the 24-70 is noticeably sharper.

Have you tried micro-adjusting it? Looks like it may be front focusing a hair?

Nope sorry, 40D didn't have that feature and don't have my 7D yet. How can you tell?

The carpet looks fairly sharp right in front of the box.

Hard to tell though with those shots.

Even if it were then shouldn't 5.6 look fairly soft?

No, the DOF at f/2.8 is VERY thin with a lens like this, at f/4 or f/5.6 the DOF is probubly correcting for it

its slightly off, Not majorly so

Okay I'll try to adjust it with my 7D when I get it and hopefully get better results.

For now you could ALSO try manually focusing the lens...it could be worth a shot :)

Yep, try some MF with live-view and see what you come up with.

Every lens focuses differently on every camera.
You may be worrying about nothing. If you do not have your 7D yet wait and see how it does on there.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...

Most lenses even topshelf lenses from Canon, Nikon et al aren't at their best wide open.. Close them down a stop or two and things get better.. It is upto the individual as to what is acceptable..

The crops you have shown here everything is normal..
