70-200 IS

I just got my lens today from BH and it appears there's a very small, 1mm or so, scratch in the lens about 2 inches or so in from the outer lens. I've taken several pictures and can't see any defect in the pictures, but I'm just concerned after paying $1700 for an L lens that it appears less than perfect.

Has anyone else had this experience? Shouldn't I return it if it has a scratch-looking defect?

Even if it doesn't affect the image it will affect the resale value. I'd send it back.

Good point, Tim, I hadn't thought of that angle. It doesn't look like a speck of dust, it's actually silvery when you shine light on it and it doesn't move with gentle tapping. I'm surprised it made it through Canon's QC.

it might have happened at bh. I would send it back.

Was the original box sealed??
Couple weeks ago I picked up 50mm 1.4 at BH and when the box was handed to me I could tell right away that some1 was playing with this lens before me. I asked for another.

That may be the case. There was no adhesive seal on the box although it looked like new packaging. I'm sending it back today. Now I'll have to wait another week or so by the time they get it and ok the return and send me another.

You'll be glad in the end that you sent it back for the full quality replacement.

I had a similar problem and got a new one within 10 days. I am more than happy. I will be using it for my first shoot this weekend. I have tested it at home, at it performs awesome. You will love it.
