People are always asking what lens to use for volleyball. I've used an 85 f/1.8, a 100 f/2 and now the 135 f/2.0. I also use the 70-200 f/2.8 if there is enough light. Last week in a dimnasium, I had to shoot ISO 6400, f/2.0 at 1/400! I looked around to see if any of the lights were out, but they were all on. :D

So, here are a few pics taken this past Saturday with a 1d MK III and the 135 f/2. All pics are ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/400 sec. I shot from up in the bleachers, along the sideline (OOPS, you can get too close), and from behind the end line as well as at each corner.

These pics haven't had any post processing, cropping or anything other than resizing for the web and a bit of sharpening.

No critique needed. I just wanted to show what the pics look like shot with the 135 on a 1.3x crop sensor body. For you 1.6x guys, the 85 or 100 would be a real good choice.

Hope you find this info helpful.
Mike

Hey bud, did you find the 100 just too short on the 1.3? I am planning on doing som vb using that setup but planned on using it mainly from the sidelines. Seems to me there'd be enough reach.

You're not kidding! "Dimnasium" is aptly correct! Wow, and I thought I shot in some dungeons!

Good action, though! I'm gonna try and shoot from the corners...never really thought of that. Thanks for the idea!

Hello Scott. I didn't have any problems shooting with the 100 f/2. It really is a nice lens. I guess I got the 135 fever really bad and just couldn't stand it any longer. It is making me think and move around more because you can get to close if you are on the sideline and the action comes to your side. :-(

Those lights up in the ceiling suck, they have no reflectors to actually help light gyms.. luckily there aren't any gyms *THAT* bad here other than the middle schools.

A couple of them posted with noise reduction might be nice too, especially the jump serve
