Took these last week. Light wasn't great but manageable. Subject matter was outstanding. Having hunted most of my life for deer, being able to see these elk up close was unbelievable. All pics taken with 40d, 70-200 2.8, Kenko 1.5x TC. No cropping.

Very nice, and I love the foggy look in the first shot.

Nice shots. I love going there. Last time there was light snow all over the mountain on the way there.

Nice shots 'HD'.

I actually like the last one best ..... a case of 'close is not necessarily always best'.

Nice work.

Matt.

Thanks guys. I like the last one best too but I've got a couple more similar in "framing" to it that I may printed. This was just the first one I came to.

Not to butt in here, Karen, but no one seems to be telling you. So, I will. Cataloochee is in a remote corner of GSMNP, with only gravel roads leading to it. You go to Exit 20 on I-40 (in NC). Cove Creek Rd is the first or second road to the right as you go south on 276. The road goes over the mountain and you must follow the signs. I forget all the turns and the distance. There is another back road into the valley, but I've never used it.

Cataloochee was a settlement, similar to Cades Cove, that became displaced when the park was formed. There are still a few old buildings, such as school, church, a farm house or two. It is a neat place. Elk were re-introduced there some years back and have been thriving, from what I can tell.

You may want to frame that first pic, as the story linked below will explain.

Being from the Asheville area, I too enjoy going to see these elk and have come to enjoy watching many of them including #21.

Great picture!
