I had an awesome opportunity to visit Colorado during the Elk rut last week. It was one of the better wildlife opportunities of the year, as there were many bulls competing with each other for breeding rights.

Bugling and rutting activity would occur throughout the day, so it was a busy time trying to keep up with the elk. I was there for 4 full days, and every day I completely drained both of my 5D batteries. On two days I had to visit go to where there was an electrical outlet in order to recharge one of the batteries.

Why not just switch over to the 1D when the 5D batteries would die? Because I really needed the full frame of the 5D - the elk allowed to approach so close that I often had to back up just to fit enough elk into the frame! I used my 400mm, but a 300 would have been a better choice.

If anyone goes to CO to shoot rutting elk with a 1.6 crop body, I recommend a 200mm lens if using a prime, or a 70-200mm zoom. They are very large animals that let you get right up on them.

This was a great trip overall. I did go specifically for rutting Elk, but was also lucky enough to get to photograph Mule Deer, Magpies, Mallards, a Bighorn Sheep, and a Moose! It was a great time and I'm already planning to return next year for this spectacular event!

By the way, forum rules allow me to attach only two images to this thread - unless someone requests more. So please, if you'd like to see more elk images here, just ask.

Excellent shots, Tom. I love the first one - the bugling, the colors in the background. The last one is also one of my favorites. They're all very nice.

Great shots, too hard to pick a favourite.

Why don't you open a photobucket account or similar so you can post 8 pics in one go?

Man, super stuff there Tom !!

Oh how lucky you guys are with all your National parks full of un-hunted animals. All our game animals here in N.Z. can be hunted all year round with no bag limits. (Game birds aside). The red deer, for example, for the most part only venture out of the bush into the open to feed right on dark and return very shortly after sunrise. Makes life a tad difficult as a wildlife photographer. Although in saying that it does add to the challenge, fun and excitement of 'the stalk'.

Great work Tom.

Matt.

Beautiful Tom! That last one sure has some character. Were you in RMNP? I ask because I think I recognize that second bull. We were probably standing right next to each other at some point last week!

Fantastic shots Tom...you could get even closer if you attach a rack to your head....heh..heh. The Elk here at the canyon are fighting for the girls. I saw a nice battle from my bus, right in the road. No camera when working though! I like the environment better in your shots. Elk need open fields, and we don't have many here. You did well! Post more!

Yes, I was in RMNP. I actually got to know some folks from Nebraska - they were real nice people! That 2nd bull came back to the area along the road about a half hour after I took that shot. He fed for about 15 or 20 minutes, then bedded down. So we probably did see one another, as I hung out near the road when he was there. Amazing how much ground they cover. Just a half hour before he was by the road, he had been chasing a harem of cows around, trying to steal them from another bull - way out on the far side of the meadow.
