Shots from Cowboys Panthers

Here's a couple of my favorite... Any feedback is welcome. Let me ask, a lot of the pictures didn't really come out as clear as I would have liked.. Here is my set up and settings. Keep in mind, I am very new to photography.

Camera: Canon T1i
Lens: Borrowed a friend's old EF 75-300mm... no IS or anything. I think the lens is like 4-5 years old. (could this be the culprit?)

Settings: I shot mostly in shutter speed priority mode set at 1/250. To get this shutter speed I had to put my ISO up to 1600. My aperture was sitting around 7.

So are the images less clear because of the ISO? The lens I was using? I am thinking about buying a new Canon EF 70-300 IS USM, would this produce better results?

I have seen very few good reviews of that 75-300 lens.. I thought about it when I bought the 70-300 after all the better reviews on the 70-300 being better. I like the crop of Newman and Smith best myself.. but.. where's your shot of the huge television overhead?
