I have traveled extensively with it on planes and nobody has ever taken a second look at it.

If the dimensions are 12x24x10 = 46 linear inches. Most arlines (such as United (external link)) only allow for 45 linear inches. Isn't it a bit risky trying to take it aboard nowadays? The last thing I'd want is for them to require it be checked

It is not made of cement. I think you could probably compress an inch of material

That doesn't sound reassuring  Airlines are pushing for smaller carry on requirements because of the increase in luggage being carried on (due to expense of checking). Has anyone actually been questioned?

Flight attendant "Sir, you will need two seats as you are a little two large for one"
Passenger "You can just squeeze me a few inches and I'll fit"

dude it is one inch. These bags are highly compressable they are not like a suitcase that is stiff and can not be compressed a few inches here and there. I give up lol

Exactly.

If an airline gives you a hassle with photographic equipment do the following:

1. Remind them of the cost and ask them if they really want to be responsible for it.

2. If nothing else, take out enough stuff - lenses, bodies, etc.. and put them in your pockets and hang the camera around your neck. Then compress the bag to it's appropriate dimiensions (it will now *easily* fit) and carry it on. Once on board, re-assemble.

That said, I've never had to do that. Most of the time they just don't want to fiddle around with you especially if that's your only carryon.

Ok guys heres the thing.... YES technically the bag is one inch too long. BUT if you are very worried about it then you can un-velcro the flap inside the bag and slide out the aluminium frame. The put the frame in your checked baggage. It weighs about 100g.

When you have done this you can compress the top of the bag by about an extra 5 inches so that it is WELL within the regulations.

I have traveled all over the world with the Tilopa this year. For most flights I did not worry about the extra inch and neither did the flight attendants. On some small flights on smaller regional planes I did remove the frame to get an even smaller size and it fitted in every overhead bin or under every seat i tried it with.

crap, not yet.... hang on, they're both right here...

OK, it works if you're me... I'm 6'4", but the black buckles on the shoulder straps are juuuust above the CC plate for the button on the chest mount. So the sternum strap can't get close for me. If you're shorter this could be an issue though....

I slipped the sternum strap on my pack (not a Tilopa) under the CC vest when I was hiking; it worked OK.

the sternum strap is removable on the tilopa, so if it's an issue you can remove it.

Thanks for the info on the CC. I hope it works as well on the Loka I’ve preordered. Although after seeing the video, I hope it is large enough. The Tilopa looks very nice! Has anybody heard on when the Loka is supposed to ship?

That was a very good video review. After owning the Tilopa, there were things that I learnt from the review haha.

Those are indeed slick bags. I imagine the weight feels very close and secure to your back? I sometimes feel my lowepro is too fat and needs to loose some inches.

Yes. That is exactly what they do well. You can ski and bike ride with them well. For that to happen, it has to be snug and balance well.
