Endless discussion seems to revolve around this question, but the end result is usually...
...17-55 for low light need
...15-85 for versatility

edit: my link seems to of bombed out, however for anyone wanting to ask comparison of the 17-55 vs the 15-85, simply using the under-utilized search function on the board, and narrowing it down to the lens section and inputting "17-55 15-85" in your criteria, and you will find 20 threads that essentially ask the same question and give the same answer.
