Hello, I'm new to photography and I've just gotten this lens as well as a 60D.

I've been browsing this thread and have noticed that there a lot of sharp images in this thread which I absolutely cannot seem to match. My images seem a little on the soft side. Obviously I'm only just starting out and it's just a hobby (expensive one). But I've been a little underwhelmed with the performance of my lens. Using either full auto or full manual, 5000 images later I'm still not sure if I'm not doing something right or maybe the lens needs to be calibrated.

So I got my hands on a 18-55mm lens and tried it out on the 60D, the only difference as far as I could see was a slightly richer colour on the 15-85mm. The sharpness was pretty much the same. Should this be the case?

Anyway, I'll post up some comparisons later on.

I've been lurking for a few weeks now and this is a great site, already picked up a few tips just by browsing around.

cheers.

Examples of what your problems are might help :) it could be AF calibration is needed or you might have gotten a defective 15-85

My 15-85 is one of the sharpest lenses I own, up there with my 100L and my Sigmalux...

I must say, I felt much the same way when I got my 500D in late 2009. I was disappointed after spending so much $ that my pictures just didn't compare. I also went and purchased this lens to improve my pictures. And actually it did, They became more vivid, with better contrast and a little sharper. And every time I took a picture and it didn't turn out just how I wanted, I would study it and think "okay, what did I do wrong?" Slowly I began to figure it out and imrpove. But I must say, the biggest improvement in my pictures came when I began shooting raw.

So now, learning to get the lighting right and the camera settings just so, shooting in raw with some nice lens, I am extremely pleased with my pictures. Give it some time and continue to study your own techniques. The end results are worth it.

Good luck.

I've only had my 60D and 15-85 a week but I wonder if most people increase the sharpness in the camera when they are shooting JPEG? It seems like it might be slightly toward the soft side.

I've been wanting to play around with it but work has been to crazy.

Hi guys,

Just a picture to show you how great this lens performs in low light conditions at 85mm, iso 2500, no flash. I was amazed by the result of this one!

Spotter -
I'm late to the party on this post, but was just wondering why you'd shoot a low light shot with -1 stop exposure compensation (as indicated by the EXIF data)?

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Lol, sorry man :)

That was the first time i did those sorts of shots with my 15-85, I'm quite impressed and happy with how they came out, Definately more flexible than the 50 prime i was using before

Litlefiter,

Yes just picked up both the 15-85 and 70-300 just the little I have shot with them I feel it is the best lens set up for me.

Fills the focal range perfect.

I also have this pair, good value and does just about everything I want, although the 15-85 is not cheap. Got a nice 70-300 S/H off ebay though, for UK £287.

Having said that though, as I said in previous posts, I'm on my 3rd copy of the 15-85. Took a while to get a good one.
