Here I sit - Cold sweating, nervous, queasy. I went and did it now. My oh my why did I need to buy a 5D and a 50D, only to long for a combination of both bodies. IQ and sensor format from the 5D, with the ergonomics, menus and added features of the 50D.

You people are such a bad influence! It's a sickness I tell you, a sickness....

On a real note  Man I'm excited to get this thing! The 5D IQ really spoiled me, and from what I see the 5DmkII will certainly not disappoint either! Hopefully it's the body I'm looking for!

Congratulations, and enjoy! :D

Whatever you do, don't read the low-ISO banding/pattern noise threads! ;)

I found those threads yesterday, and while it is a bit concerning I think all will be fine. Whats the usual process for these 5DmkII's? Do I have to make sure I have a certain firmware loaded for optimal results?

If I never read threads like that, I wouldn't know that a "problem" exists with my 5D MKII.

Enjoy your new camera!

The camera will probably come with updated firmware. There are links at Canon on how to check the firmware version ( I think it's simply on one of the menus.) Just compare to the most recent which is v. 1.1.0.

Thanks, that's reassuring! I think sometimes a placebo-like effect comes into play. I'm assuming (cautiously) that the 5DmkII will beat out the IQ of the 5D, no?

I love my 5D2. I think you're about to fall in love with photography all over again.

Congrats.

I have the exact same combination - 5dMKii and 50D and it's quite the pair. Oh, and an Elan IIe for film.

You'll love them both though I haven't really shot much with the 50D in the last few weeks. I did shoot BMX two weeks ago and used it, love the better FPS and crop sensor.

Other than the video option, where will you notice the difference in images between a 5D and the 5DII assuming you don't print big?

Well, actually I sold both my 50D and my 5D to fund the 5DmkII. I never, ever used the 50D since purchasing my used 5D, and it only made sense to sell both and buy the Mark II since it's essentially the combo I'm looking for currently.

But I agree, it would be darn nice to be able to keep the 50D along with the Mark II. ;)

Assuming you don't print huge, crop a lot, or shoot at iso 3200+ I'd be suprised if you do see the difference... The 5DII certainly has the edge, but the 5D is still a tough one to beat! :)

And to the OP, congrats and enjoy it!! The mkII is too much money for me to manage at the moment though. D:

You must mean, "other that all of the other features that the 5D MKII has over the original 5D". Definitely more than just video.

The main things that the Mark II have that I wished my original 5D had...

-Updated Menus
-Big VGA LCD
-Microadjust
-Live View (helpful sometimes, didn't think it would be)
-Detailed battery info
-More crop-ability
-In-body speedlight control can be useful.

The video will most likely never be used beyond a goof around when I first get it.

From what I have seen, the IQ from the 5D2 is definitely better. High ISO looks verrry impressive as well.
