The unreachable part, yes. But on the 7D you can map the button to switch from AI servo to one shot AF (or vice versa).

Yes, hence the useless of that button when you have the 100-400 and are handholding. No way that button can be pressed. If I am AI servo and want to switch to One shot quickly. What other options do I have ? Nothing else right!

I need to see if it works with the 70-200 as I'll be holding that close to the mount.

All nits aside, I love this camera. The AF tracking is so good, I feel the fella reads my mind and when it fails, I feel bad for it :-( but I understand that it tried it's best.

I still need to see if a busy but somewhat distant bg can distract the AF once initial acquisition is made. Initial acquisition should automatically (read somewhere about the 7D's algos) pick the closest subject so the background should not be acquired. I am curious to see if I can replicate the bad behaviour of that infamous thread listing the 7D's failures to track birds against busy backgrounds (which the D700 apparently excels in).

It looks like it did focus on the grass...the cyclist looks soft very soft...

Really! hmm.. I thought it was quite good. I could swear that the lit focus AF area was on the cyclist. Upon closer examination, yes, there was some motion not compensated for looks like. I mustve forgotten to pan or the cyclist mightve moved suddenly (although at 1/2500, I wouldn't have expected that kind of issue). Also, I think I left the IS on (mode 1). Need to get back into mental checklist practice when panning..

Not withstanding the execrable quality of the photos, the following show the tracking very well. All on central zone AF.

The one thing I realized was that with the 100-400, the DOF button might as well be un-mappable. You can never reach that button when you are tromboning out.

I like the term you used here, "tromboning", lol. I know how it is, as I used to play the trombone. But I have never heard this term in regards to the 100-400 before (I know it's a push-pull mechanism)! Quite fitting, though, hehe.

These are beautiful, joove.

I was at the Honda Center last night and got in with my 400D with 25-105L and 10-22 in my toploader 75. I'm from Sydney Australia so I didn't know of any possible issue.

When I got there the first security woman told me that I couldn't bring the bag in. I took out the gear and all she was concerned about was how far the lenses extended. Another security guy came over and took a look and said it was no problem and I was fine.

 Man, I had no luck, then! By the way, what event where you at Honda Center for? The Ducks were not playing last night, so my best guess would be pre-season basketball? It's also possible that the arena rules are adjusted for the type of event taking place, so perhaps they enforce it for NHL hockey more, or maybe it's just that I really had no luck the time I tried, lol.

Yep. Pre-season Lakers. I'm here on a holiday and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see the famous Lakers! A great experience.

Maybe they weren't so strict because it was pre-season? I didn't think I would even have a problem. Lucky I didn't travel with my 70-200!!

These are out of focus (OOF). You might need to check the lens or 7D. Try playing with the lens micro adjust.

Thanks for looking at these. :o Haven't used an SLR in months and suddenly did not know what to expect with the 100-400. I MAFd in a hurry yesterday (without using the lens align) so could be off. I am hoping it is the IS(1) that is interacting with the panning. I usually just turn IS off (if I remember) . My static shots from yesterday were pretty sharp!

I'll do some in field adjustments once I am at Laguna Seca. While I am going there to support Acura and my car club I want to get atleast a few good shots out of it. I am also developing a fondness for the Ford GT team. I will cheer those buggers on as well. I just hope I don't waste too much time adjusting focus!

Pictures of two time MVP Alex Ovechkin at pregame skate. I am happy with pictures. Last picture is Mike Green hitting a puck right at my face.
Using AI Servo with Continuous AF track priority. Pictures at 3200 iso since I have 24-105 f/4 (1/500 speed). I am happy with results and faster focus on the 7D.

Ah, oh that could be QUITE handy...except i use DoF preview...Can you map that function to a different button?

Unfortunately no. And because of the design of the DOF preview button it only works while pressing it. It doesn't toggle from AI servo to one shot, it switches to one shot only as long as you hold it. I would much rather be able to use the new m.fun button as a real toggle between the two modes but that isn't supported. :(

Post #18 of this thread. Not great shots by any means but the AF did stay locked.

Here are a couple. Both in the late afternoon in somewhat dim lighting. 1/1000 @ ISO1250 f4 (70-200 f4 IS). Noice reduction applied in post so slightly softer than shot. That's my 11 year old lab: so she isn't quite as springy as she was about 8 years ago, but she still thinks she is still a puppy. I like the AF on this body, but like the image quality of my 5DM2

Good luck at the races...it is the last of the American Le Mans and the last one for De Ferran. I was going to go, but other things came up. Are you media or just fan.
