Canon seem to have gone against received wisdom in getting such high performance with an 18mp APS-C sensor. What have they done? This looks like becoming the death knell for Nikon's lead in low light performance.

The pixel density on the 7d is MUCH higher than on the 5D2 (see my calculations in the 1D4 thread). Does the 5D2 significantly out-perform the 7D in low light?

Oh yes it does. Still, I think the 7D is a remarkably well performing for a crop at high ISOs. I think it could be the best of the crop bodies at high ISO performance. It's definitely the best out of my current and former Canon bodies (7D, XT, 40D, 50D)
But note that my image was exposed a bit to the right and went through a thorough NR process. But hey, you can apply as much NR as you want as long as you don't kill the detail in the shot. Plus having a 1000 pixel wide image as the final output size helps too due to resizing.

Lens used was the 17-40 F4L

I wouldn't say significantly....I own both and tested them. Yes the 5DII has an edge but its not a night and day difference IMO.

I used a 24-105 with the 7D at the zoo yesterday with great results. Some shots were usable (on my zenfolio) even after cropping off 90% of the pic! A sharp lens, great AF, and high MP combined makes for some great results. I'm a bit disappointed in the noise at low ISO but it retains excellent IQ when a little NR is applied.

Totally agree ... I've got the same combination ... great results overall indeed.

Just took some Panda pics today. 24-105 is perfect for Zoo.

Noise at low ISO will not occur if you slightly over expose image. slightly under exposed will add noise. bump ISO up or lower shutter speed.
