Woa, those Banff shots and cats are awesome! Glad to see more Canadians onboard here as well ;)

Kids are definitely tough (I have a 3 year old.) Rather than adjust the brightness, you might try utilizing the shadow/highlights tool in photoshop and maybe a curves or levels adjustment. Good first effort though!

Thanks for the advice/suggestion. I will have a go at that over the weekend.

Or how about some advice for taking the picture with the camera the next time he encounters a scene like that? Nothing wrong with making adjustments in post, I guess, but the idea of photography is to get the photograph right is it not? (For me this is rhetorical :D). It would appear that you took the shot with the on camera flash, which is fine, but remember you can adjust the intensity of the flash to achieve that 25% decrease in brightness that you did in post on your subject while still maintaining the exposure you want from the rest of the scene using flash compensation. You can find this adjustment in quick menu on the camera - the "Q" button.

One of the few occasions I agree with the use of the word "awesome". Generally an appallingly misused word on the west of the Atlantic.

It's actually pretty easy - we took the train to all our destinations except Beijing which we flew out of Zhangjiajie to Beijing. Most of our train rides were out of Shanghai and were between 12-18 hours (12 to Huangshan from Shanghai and 18 from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie). It's just under $100USD for a soft sleeper train which saves you a night in a hotel and is pretty relaxing for the most part. Flying is even easier as it took us 1h50m to fly from Zhangjiajie to Beijing whereas the train would've taken us 25 hours :)

As far as freedom you can pretty much see any of the sites on your own or hire a guide to help you out. The only place I am aware of in China that you're not allowed to enter without a guide/deal is Tibet which has very strict requirements for entry. Huangshan and Zhangjiajie you can enter on your own, pay the fee and hike both mountains at your own free will. When we're back home I'll make a post about our trip with lots of photos and provide information on where we stayed and recommendations if people are interested.

I actually just bought the 5D yesterday so for the most part of this trip all I've had with me is the 7D. Admittedly when we first arrived in Zhangjiajie I was extremely happy to have the 7D as we got stuck in the tail end of a monsoon like downpour down south that just hammered us with rain.

smcclelland, my wife and I are doing a trip to China soon and are planning to head to Beijing, Xian, Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. Have you been to the last two places at all? I am interested to hear about Jiuzhaigou as it is supposedly a nature wonderland and photographers dream.

Those tigers and other animals look great! such clean sharp shots of them, worthy of putting up on the wall.

I went there with 2 lenses; Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS and Canon 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS. By far, most of my shots were with the 100-400 because I was pretty far away. Stayed on the camera most of the time. The 2nd photo of the smaller cat is cropped but the other 3 are full sized. EXIF info is intact.
The 1st and 3rd were shot at 400mm, the 4th at 320mm. The 2nd was at 400mm but cropped to probably 50%.

Love the bird and the Banff shots too. So many great shots on here with the 7D. An awesome camera in the right hands.
