Thanks a lot Ben. Coming from you that means a lot. I just love the way he looks here and most importantly my GF and her family really love it. Not surprisingly his favorite shot is the sliding tackle stop with the turf shooting up

Just got my 7D today and I'm pretty blown away so far. Weather is terrible so I'm snapping a few indoors to see how it goes. Not the greatest examples on the thread (feel a bit intimidated by by the great work on this site) but I'll post anyway...

Personally I'm disappointed with the 7D. My brother got it and I've used his since I let him use my lens and cameras back and forth and I just think that besides the speed, and the internal flash control for wireless flash control it doesn't have anything else to offer. Maybe its because I'm spoiled and going from an FF to CS has that effect on you.

I dont know....anyone care to comment?

No. There are numerous threads for complainers of the 7D, try joining in one of those and i'm sure you will find some people that agree with you..
I disagree but that's just my personal opinion.

Haha, it's great optical illusion. If he hadn't posted the photos in sequence, this definitely appears as though she's flying!

But looking at the sequence of photos, then you can tell that her right foot is no more than 1-foot off the ground.

I don't know.......looks to me like she's got some pretty good air there too.

I am curious....these look like you could have shot them candidly. That is to say...does she know you're shooting her?

well, let's put it another way. The only thing the 5Dii has over the 7D is the sensor. Otherwise it's worse in every way. Sure the sensor is the heart of a camera, so that kinda makes it the point of the 5Dii -vs- 7D threads... But the 7D's sensor isn't bad and it's actually better at some things. There are a lot of people who have FF on a pedestal....

From the sequence, you can tell in the first photo where she took off. You can also look at how much "bigger/taller" she is in the frame. So in the following images, she's getting smaller in the photos, thus moving away.

That isn't to say she may not have some serious hops as she is a dancer after all. But if there wasn't another reference photo posted, it would appears he is flying some 4-5 feet off the ground. :D

Your EXIF for the soap bubble shot:
Make Canon
Model Canon EOS 7D
Date/time 9/11/2010 3:28:16 PM
Exposure time 1/80 s
F-number f/5.6
Exposure program Normal Program
ISO speed ratings ISO 3200
Shutter speed value 1/83 s
Aperture value f/5.7
Exposure bias value 0.00 eV
Metering mode Partial
Focal length 135 mm

Which means your shutter speed was waaay toooo slow for the Focal Length. Combination of two things that contributed to the OOF:
1) Bubble trajectory/gravity. It's in the air, it's moving, your shutter is too slow to "freeze it" in position.
2) Hand-shake induced blur. You should always try to shoot for 1/(FL + crop) shutter speeds. So shooting at 135mm, you should've aimed for shooting 1/(135 x 1.6) = 1/200s (roughly). I'm assuming your f/5.6 was limited to the lens at that FL so you either needed to crank up the iso to 6400/12800, OR just use a flash (and have your sync set to 1/250s).

I didn't look at the other images but I suspect they were taken at the same event, likely same lighting conditions and lens, hence, shutter speeds were too slow to get that crisp, sharp focus.

Thanks for the tips. Will practice and plan to improve at my next event.
