I pulled the trigger! Certainly will open a new world and learning curve on focus and lighting. I'm looking forward to using this as a portrait lens as well.

Great first shots with a very nice and versatile lens.

Any lens can be used for portraits. But the term "portrait lens" generally means a lens that is ideal for studio portraiture. A convenient focal length of such a lens is 80-100mm in 35mm format, which is about 50mm on a crop. Using a 100mm lens for this requires double the working distance, and that can be inconvenient if space is limited, and can make communication with the model awkward.

Thanks.

My intention is more for outdoor & non-studio use, candids and controlled shots. Should be fun!

To say "I'm happy" with this purchase would be a complete understatement.

Love the sharpness of this lens. It's my go-to lens for product photography, but occasionally I get to use the macro facility.
