Tamron is very nice, but I'm leaning Canon in case resale is easier if every needed.

Hello, handheld. The IS helps a little when close to subject, better than nothing. Love the 100 on both my bodies. Will focus hunt more often using a crop sensor, or is my experience with 7d2 vs 5d. Tamron 90 vc would save you some $.

Is this a bad lens for full body and family photography, like for a few kids? How far back do you have to stand to get 3 kids in focus at 2.8?

It's going to be tricky depending how they are lined up or grouped. Is your camera FF or crop? Do you want to shoot them full size or just their faces?
I wouldn't shoot 3 kids with that one and possibly use a 35mm or similar. For portraits of a single kid the 100mm would be fantastic.
