There I was standing next to the screen door when the dog jumped up on the porch and stood at the door but was not looking at me. It was then I heard a rather loud humming sound. Afraid that it might be a hornet I waited and the hum shifted and the dog chased it. So I grabbed my cam and watched. In moments the hum came back close and then I spotted it too. The Largest Hover Fly I ever seen. At least 100 times bigger than what I am accustomed to here.

So it was hovering next to the wall where the dog couldn't get to it but was clearly ready to give more chase if the chance arouse.

Snapping away, it decided to land and I kept stabbing that shutter button as I got closer and closer.......

Then, it took wing and the sound of it made me jump back like a little schoolgirl....I LoL'd at myself...but I kept with it.....

Sadly I missed focus and this was the best of the third part of the oddity.

Just thought I would share.

Nice term you used, Beefy.

A couple of full sized shots to help you comprehend how BIG this guy was....

I use a Canon Rebel XTi, crop frame sensor and had no tubes on, just a Canon 60 mm Macro.

First shot is over the deep freezer...... second is while he/she is on the rim of a normal sized cereal bowl filled with cat food for the cats....No crop on these.
