We were driving through a local park the other day while it was raining and we came across 10 or 15 of these birds. Can anyone tell me what it is?

That's a Sandhill Crane. Populations are increasing again and we see them more and more now that they are no longer being eaten. Maybe they will lose their fear of man again and start showing up on golf courses and in the parks again. They eat bugs and small animals and around here are mostly seen in harvested fields. Wait till he barks. If you've never experienced that, it'll scare the crap out of you the first time up close. :)

Nice shot of a Sandhill Crane. On holiday in central Florida last summer there were three of these guys quite happily wandering around the housing development next to the golf course where we stayed. On several occasions I had to stop the car so they could walk across the road in front of me. Lovely birds.

A Sandhill Crane. They are pretty cool looking and we are seeing them in larger numbers now. No barking yet...

You'll know when you hear one. They can be heard more than a mile away. :)

We may have seen one or two of these in years past but now they are everywhere in this park (Kensington Metro Park). Kinda cool to watch too.
