I have the G6, just got my 420EX today and have not had any luck trying to get it to fire all the time for fill flash - Portrait setting on the camera with E-ttl mode on the 420EX. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to go to Program and other semi-auto modes?

Your advice would be appreciated. thanks.

I haven't tried using my 420ex for fill flash much but try this: hit Func and scroll to Flash +/-. Adjust it down. I think if your flash is in Auto, that will control it. I sure wish there were a good tutorial for the G6/420ex. I've googled and googled but haven't seen much.

YEs Raw,

The key to having th G6 work as fill flash is to ensure your camera is set to slow synchro while in Av or Tv modes while also having the high speed synchro setting on the flash head enabled. Otherwise the camera will always default to 1/60 of a second or higher, this might be okay for outdoor bright conditions, but when your in dimly lit conditions or dark, the flash will only expose for the close subjects).

In bright conditions i always notch back the fill flash to -2/3 compensation.

Hello,

I have a G5 and a 420EX and ussually I take pictures with the fill in flash... for that I only set the camera flash mode in the "use allways the flash" (I mean the plain ray) position. That's all. The dial is ussually in P or any other position except AUTO.

Regards,

On the G6 with the 420ex attached the on camera flash setting button is disabled, so what you are saying would not work on the G6.
