The focus lag is one of the most frustrating parts of dark shooting; I want instant reaction. Good thing I wasn't planning on ever buying a 7D. Seems like a great camera for sports.

I just had a play in good light, it focuses very quickly. My first impressions were in a very, very dark room with a dancing couple that were moving very quickly, and no AF assist. It works better than a 40D.

Which means it probably kills the 5D/5DII in low light AF, as well.

New RAW files are up, hopefully in focus without camera shake this time.

Cheers Tim. :)

It;'s always good to see real-world camera RAW files, as the Beta cameras always seem to be a little better than production ones - but they look really, really good.

Wish you had a 5DmkII so I could compare both side-by-side, because if I'm not mistaken, the 7D looks just as good as the 5DmkII at higher ISO.

I'm always using my 30D and 20D at ISO3200, so ISO6400 and ISO12800 looking better than a 30D at 3200 has sold it for me. Plus, obviously, I won't have to get rid of my 17-55, 30mm 1.4 and 50-150. I can get a 5DmkII next year, along with a few primes.

- Matt

Doesn't much matter which is better, the 7D and 5DII both do a good job :)

Honestly I expect for a given print size the 5D, 5DII, and 7D will all be within 1-2 stops max. I'll have a 5D classic around this weekend, I could do some tests against that but I really don't care all that much.

And thankfully most 5D owners (myself included) probably don't care about the performance of the latest crop sensor camera beyond a casual interest in seeing what Canon is doing now (and what they should've done with the 5D II).

Is there a custom function to control whether the camera shots when in focus or not, the one on the 1dmk3 can be set to allow the camera to shoot whichever way you like.

Looking forward to having a look at the shots and thanks for posting up so quick Tim.

No idea. The manual's available online from Canon :)

If you use custom function to set focus to either the af-on or * button and you are basically doing the same thing. Forcing the camera to fire every time the shutter button is tripped regardless of focus.
