you guys are lucky you have access to those places...here in LA you gotta get a permit to shoot at really nice buildings.

The only location I can shoot here is in the woods... without no hassles and interruption
...had to watch out for rattlesnakes though...LOL

Pham, what is the reason for DO pointing above her head? Fall off towards her feet or you just wanted to use softer light by feathering?
Wicked shot BTW

i think i lowered and pointed down the D.O. once i got the compositions started.. the photo Ryan took was just when was just setting up the back light and didn't even have the key light ready yet either..

totally agree with you Phil.. when i was in L.A. we were asked to leave 3 beaches.. i rented a Profoto 600R AcuteB and a beauty dish for a senior session.. and we got it all done before the cops came and shut us down..

also i played many rounds of golf in Sacramento.. and i do remember reading signs to watch out for snakes in the wild Rough out of play area.. lucky i was hitting it straight for that week..

We do have it good here in the Midwest for this type of thing.. Campus was dead and knew we can just operate like we did..

here is a good video showing how dead the main purdue building was.. 8pm was the time..

We take a lot of risks. I think if you don't try it you'll never know. The worst that will happen is you waste your time setting up equipment and someone tells you to leave. If you are nice about it I don't think they will arrest you. I hope not anyways. We have been kicked out of areas before and I have been kicked out of an old house in the middle of the country by a cop once. No idea how he got out there, but whatever.

We also ask before we just set up and shoot. So it's not so rambunctious as you may think.

it's different here in LA.. the city wants money from you.. you need to pay for permits to shoot especially public areas....state rangers are everywhere. A lot of my friends have been ticketed and CF cards were confiscated....guerrilla shooting is risky....unless you go to the desert.

LA is one thing, Billings, MT is another... OK, not quite Billings, but I got a Federal Ticket earlier this year for Commercial Photography without a Permit for shooting some sunset shots at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Park. No big deal huh? How about a $525 fine? Nice! And then to get the summons in the mail that says right on the front in big, not so friendly letters:

United States of America
vs.
Charles W. Gordon

Holy Crap! No CF cards got take just a crap load of money.
Here's a couple of the shots I got before being busted down, not really worth $525 I don't think...

And no, I wasn't standing in the restricted areas. I was on the paved roadway. These markers are right there within reach.
Lesson learned: Don't bother taking a nice camera into that park or even look like you know what you're doing with one.
The first thing the ranger said to me was, "That's a nice camera you have there." Followed by, "What'cha doing?" to which I said, "Taking pictures..." Duh! It only got worse from there. I was shooting my 40D with grip, a 24-70L and a Canon 540EZ speedlite mounted to the camera. I guess that was enough to convict me as a Pro.

wowzers that's terrible. Sometimes it pays to be stiff with the guard as they think they know what they are talking about, but most of the time they have no right to force you to stop.

I had a similar situation when i went into a veteran cemetery here locally to do some shooting. I ended up doing a quick video and left > http://vimeo.com/7304195 (external link) because it was sprinkling. Security guard asked me what i was doing. Started to get hostile with me and I told him i'm a photographer blah blah. He said i was disrespecting the grave sight. I said I've photographed a Vietnam vet funeral before and i have family in the military the last thing i would do is disrespect this area. Told him he has no right to tell me what to do in a public area and I have my photographer rights in my bag if he wanted to glance at them. He started to back down and didn't really have much of a rebuttal to me. So i turned around and kept doing what i came to do.

that's crazy, man. As if you had like a crew with you with a bunch of lights and equipment... I would understand that.

Well since the attacks of 9/11 all Federal Park Rangers are now armed (to the teeth!) and have new powers. They are basically a Federal police force. So arguing with them isn't likely to get you anywhere. They had decided that I was guilty and they were going to level the maximum fine at me. I even went so far as to contact the Federal Defenders office in Billings to find out what was the best thing to do about this seeing how I live in the Denver, CO area. Once I explained the situation to the guy his responce was, "You can get a ticket for that?!?" He said he'd have to look into it because even though he works at the Federal level, he had never heard of this before.

Basically he said that this was like an expensive slap on the wrist and that if I wanted to fight it I could probably do real well standing in front of a Federal judge, but I would have to appear in court which would mean an airplane ticket to Billings, at least a two night stay over at a hotel and time lost at work (no pay if I'm not there). I chose to pay the ticket. The defender told me that this type of ticket would never be reported anywhere outside of the National Park service, so I won't appear on my record. It's not like I was convicted of a felony. Basically a BS charge and a way the Park service makes up short falls in budgets.

Once the defender started to look into this, he found a lot of tickets written from this particular Nat'l Park. Hmmmm... I've heard lots of folks on this board talking about going to Yosemite with all sorts of pro gear and never getting busted down, so this must be a park to park kind of thing.

Little Bighorn Battlefield Nat'l Park is really a B level park in the Nat'l Park system. A real bisket of a park. You drive in and have a look about and then leave. You can spend your $6 dollars on a cup of coffee and have a better time really.

Hey Pham, I noticed from that set-up shot that there are no sand bags on those lightstands. Isn't that Rotolux deep octo box really front heavy? Not a crit, just wondering.

Is there an updated version of this anywhere? It says 2006. I'm asking because I'm in NYC and park rangers have attempted at bullying me a few times before. I think I got away only because they didn't care or I just got lucky.

And Chas, that's some BS. That $500+ fine went to their budget for sure.

I'm framing the summons and ticket I got as a trophy of sorts. It'll hang in my office at home. A great conversation piece for sure. If I don't laugh at it I'll end up crying.
I guess that makes me a pro. Well at least in the eyes of the Nat'l Park service. :D

So Pham and Ryan, are you guys students or former students there?
