Wow. For ghetto setup, that's got some awesome mood and setting to it!

Might be just me, but the focus seems a tad soft. Make sure you're focusing where you want; if this is a self-portrait, as soon as you find focus, switch the lens to MF so it doesn't move. Otherwise, if this is a kit lens, and the kit UV filter is on there, take it off. I've had some shots go soft with that on there, as have others.

Is there an updated version of this anywhere? It says 2006. I'm asking because I'm in NYC and park rangers have attempted at bullying me a few times before. I think I got away only because they didn't care or I just got lucky.

And Chas, that's some BS. That $500+ fine went to their budget for sure.

It is what it is. Don't live by it, just use it for general reference. Be smart when to stand up against people and when to bite your tongue and back down.

I'm framing the summons and ticket I got as a trophy of sorts. It'll hang in my office at home. A great conversation piece for sure. If I don't laugh at it I'll end up crying.
I guess that makes me a pro. Well at least in the eyes of the Nat'l Park service. :D

So Pham and Ryan, are you guys students or former students there?

I am a former student. Graduated spring of 2010. Pham's wife works in one of the housing units for undergrads. We are also well known locally in West Lafayette and sometimes that helps us get access or sympathy when encountering people that want us to leave. However, that doesn't mean we can just prance around as we want. We are cautious, get permission sometimes, and aware when we shoot in places like this. Aurielle's most recent shots was easy because the students were on Thanksgiving break making campus and every building empty.

Nah not a self portrait, a buddy wanted some shots of himself to promote his solo shows, I told him I would take a few but couldn't promise him anything I tend to shoot in the daytime because lack of external flash on my 7D and I am still learning everyday. I do have a canon clear protective filter on. It is a kit lens 28-135mm. The one thing I do like about the one of him standing is the light that is casted up his jeans, i thought it had a cool look. but thanks for the feedback

1/15 and 1/6 is way too slow for portraits. That is why you pictures look soft and blur ;)

I agree I guess I could have raised my ISO to increase shutter speed, all in all I need a better low light lens, better lighting, well you get the point I need a lot of things but I was just trying to work with what I had

Zach I have been having issues with white BG...I keep on getting the white spills. I usually have my setting (two lights for BG f13, main f11, fill f8, I have the subject about 11 feet from BG) I usually get the spills when I use my 70-200 but not any other lens. Any idea as to why?

Thanks,

Have you tried flagging the background lights? How are you angling the background lights?
Have you tried using the lens hood on the 70-200?

I use bifold to flag my lights. I found that if my camera is parallel to where the light is pointed I get that flare. I have been trying to figure out to point my lights to BG so I don't have this problem but haven't been very successful so far.

Just my 2 Cents

A couple of bodies, a few lenses, a few lights, and a few modifiers.....Here to learn! :)

I've been having an issue with getting flare from the back light when I need to frame two people against this BG. I'm testing this out as I have a shoot coming up on the 3rd that will require me to have a set-up where anyone that wants a shot can come an d stand in, pay and I shoot them. It's part of a friends X-mas party. I just want the most simple and easiest set-up to work with. The estimate of people to be sjot is between 100 to 150. Maybe a few more, it's hard to say. So I need something that people can just step into and I shoot. obviously a huge ammount of creativity will be thrown out for this because od time constraints.

The back light I've tried so far is either a speedlite with blackwrap to create a topper flag for the lens or a 100ws studio style strobe with a snoot built from blackwrap. I think I like the spread of the speedlite better than the snooted studio strobe, but that still needs to be worked on. Also, I think my set-up in my basement is limiting me to the hieght of the ceiling. If I had more room then I should be able to defeat the flare all the time.

But here's a few shots so far. My models are limited to my kids and their friends when they come over. I had to interupt a game of Nerf dart guns to get some of these. Please let me know what you think I could do better.

These were all shot using a Westcott shoot-thru camera right powered by a 100ws studio strobe @ 1/4 to full power. A reflective umbrella camera left with a 540EZ @ 1/4 power zoomed to 24mm, and a Zeikos 680EX @ 1/4 power as the back light from behind the back drop. Basic 3 point lighting.
