That's a great shot Gene and glad to see more of your shots once again, albeit in an entirely different area. My biggest nitpick for the future is the harsh light on the nose that may have been caused by oils. Great first try.

Never even noticed it lol, honestly it was frighteningly dark at the top of these mountains. Adjusted a couple other things in this edit....very old image though taken with my Nikon D70 now that I think about it hahahaha.

....wow looking again at it that was quite the improvement of the image......maybe I could salvage a lot of old shots that I hated strictly due to how I was processing back then.....

SuperHuman21, thanks for the comments. yeah, I didn't do anything to knock down any shiny spots caused by oily skin. I wanted to do a minimal amount of pp on the skin since the shot was of a male.

This is a far cry from my normal style of scenic photography shot as hdr but I want to become at least conversent with as many aspects of photography as I can. Here is a b&w version from a slightly different angle.

I've gradually been acquiring speedlights, modifiers and triggers so I could learn to do some portrait work. This is my first 'session' and is a shot of myself. Thanks to everyone here, viewing such inspiring work has helped me learn as I lurked.

I used a 580EX II in a Qbox, camera left as the main and a 430EX II in a home made snoot 180° opposite the main as a kicker. I purposely lit this so my left side was in deep shadow.

I know I have a long way to go to be in the same league as many of you here but I have to start somewhere. Comments are welcome

Gene

This is very nice.

Gene, you're welcome. That last shot is a killer, very powerful. Don't know if you've thought about it but someone in POTN mentioned absorbing the oils, especially the nose, with some kind of tissue or padding beforehand (no idea what the proper term is for this special thingy).
