not bad at all for a first effort, i'd suggest putting a little more main light on the model and lifting your octa a bit, the shadows and catch lights suggest it was no higher than the model's head, and main lighting from the bottom always looks a bit odd, besides if the light is up high you get some more definition in the cheek bones, again, great first effort!
I was hoping to get the octa higher, but unfortunately, the way my basement is set up, there's a large beam in the way. I may try to push the model closer to the background so I can get the octa between her and the beam so I can raise it up and try again. I think I have 8' ceilings in the basement (I know - too low) and the top of the octa box was probably 6'6" off the ground because of that beam. Would it make enough of a difference to get it up the extra foot and a half, or should I use a smaller modifier and get it higher and closer to her to get a better angle?

Do you have a calibrated monitor? Her skin is a strange color.
I wish. Neither of my monitors are calibrated - it's on my wishlist. I tried to calibrate with my Spyder2, but both of my screens are cheap TN panels and it didn't seem to help much so I haven't used the Spyder in a while. I'm hoping to get a decent IPS panel soon and a better calibrator.
Anyone have a suggestion for a monitor in the $300-$500 range and should I upgrade the Spyder2 to something better?

I agree on adding a little more key genzbenz.
Thanks for the advice everyone - I know I have a long way to go, and I have to start somewhere. I'm looking forward to trying again and receiving more helpful input.
I ran these through the Totally Rad action "Cool as a Cucumber" to help cool down the skin a bit - does it help?
