Is this a compositing job? Nice!

I would put money down to say that it defiantly is a composite.

Yes, the maternity shot was a 3 light setup. One photogenic, 2 Einsteins. 1 PCB octabox and 2 strips. The background was two images blended together (the sky, then the water). All shot on a 5dmkii with a 24-70L... Mostly at around 70mm. She was shot in my living room.

I wish the front of her was shadowed more. Was it your intention to make it obvious that it's a composite?

By the front of her, do you mean her stomach, or front as in the middle area between her stomach and her backside? I wanted a rembrandt light on her face -- which the main light did, up high and to the left. I needed kicker lights on either side of her to make her fit into the background. If there were no kicker lights on the left or right, it may appear even MORE as a composite because she wouldn't fit into the lighting of the natural environment. I took into consideration there would be a bright sun behind her.

I think it's quite clever, even the catchlight works.

except that she is very close to the camera and there is no way in heck the background would be nearly as in focus as it is...

also, why a bra? wouldn't it have made more sense to have her wear a bikini top, or just drape fabric across her chest?

Thanks Mike! I have just begin shoot with strobe, have not think to own the light meter. It was not a cheap accessory, currently have to practice 'ancient/universal light meter' in shooting, more to learn :D

it seems like a person can never learn everything. Once you finally understand one subject (like equipment), then, you start from the beginning learning "lighting". After that comes processing, after that comes "posing"... lots of fun along the way, though.

happy shooting, lim

"Classic Hollywood"... if not pretty darn close... which is my absolute favorite lighting style...even though I can't seem to capture it myself. (Probably don't have the equipment either). In C.H. Style, shadow defines the image and lines...not the well lit portion. Very rare these days. Thanks for this unusual presentation Pham.

"Movin' on Up!" on my view :)

I hear you on the wardrobe... unfortunately we didn't have something better to choose from at the time. Also, if you're shooting with a lot of power... say f/14, the background would totally be in focus.

Not true at all, depends on the lens you're using actually and subject/distance relationship, at f/14 would still give you a blurred background if you use a longer focal lens.

What people forget is not everything has to be technically perfect to achieve a good photo, I'm sure the client is over the moon and IMO it all works quite well at achieving what it's meant to. Even the bra works for me, I think pregnancy requires a little more intimacy and a bra gives this over a bikini.

The photo in question is quite obviously shot trying to achieve a wider perspective, I can't really see it having being shot with a 200mm lens.
