I am taking alot of indoor photo of my son. He runs around crazy so I am looking to upgrade. right now I have 30D + 50mm f1.8 + 16-35mm f2.8 + 580EX + 100mm macro for indoor stuff. My goal is not to use flash.

I really like 50mm f1.8 thin DOF, but AF servo is inaccurate when not using center AF pont. Plus I am using ISO800 or above alot I find.

1. Get 85mm f1.8 for faster AF, and less DOF
2. Get 50D
3. Get 7D
4. Get Nothing, use 16-35mm
5. Get Nothing now, save up for 5D2 for best ISO performance.

I like 5D Mark one, but not sure if AF is that much better than my 30D. I shoot candids of my son so I like to better AF on camera or lens. Another thing is 5D Mark one does not come cheaper than 7D (in Canada).

Not having accurate AF off the centre point (in less than good light) is a problem for every camera not a 1 Series. Going to faster lenses with a kid that will only move faster is a recipe for OOF shots no matter what you're using. I'd say to get better at bounced flash and not try and always solve the problem with a wider aperture.

Opening up for some nice portraits with the background dropped out is great but not every photo needs paper thin depth of field. Using flash and using your background should be skills you have to rely on without always using a fast lens. Looking at your list, I would scrap both the 50 and the 100, replace them with the 85/1.8 and some extension tubes.

In reality, thin depth of field is over-used and the "natural lighting" in most people's houses is crap.
