On a related note, I was thinking last night how useful having a kelvin scale white balance on my plasma TV would be!

I know AWB is oftentimes correct, but I really wanted to know how to set the WB myself.

As you've found, "oftentimes correct" isn't good enough? And that's only true shooting outside. AWB isn't very good indoors. Notice that the very last exposure in the 2nd group of tests was of a gray card, & it's way off.

Gray Card…White Paper. What’s best?

And just to muddy the waters a bit, remember that the "correct" WB isn't necessarily the "right" WB for a particular image? Would you want to neutralize the nice colors in a sunset? ;)

Each bulb package had a pointer on that scale denoting which of these "temperatures" the particular bulb was. I haven't tried it, but could you use these bulbs in a studio-like setting, and set the camera's custom white balance setting to the same number on the bulb package?? Has anyone tried this yet?

The problem with fluorescents -- most of them -- is that they have what is termed a 'discontinuous spectrum' of output light. So, most commonly, they are deficient in magenta, for example. If you view a full spectrum color swatch in discontinuous spectrum light, certain colors (where the spectrum is missing) are inaccurately captured in their intensity due to not having light within that part of the color spectrum. A magenta toned shirt ends up looking darker than it truly is. For snapshots, it might not be objectionable, but if you had to have color accuracy, it would be the pits.

Some fluorescent tubes have pretty good spectral characteristics, and correct out fairly well, while others defy correction.
