Shooting as the sun is going down

I was shooting at the Stl Cardinals game on Sunday afternoon and had some troubles as the sun was going behind the stadium leaving the batter in the shade and some players in the sun. What is the best way to tackle this? I assume apeture? I was shooting M and didn't have the time to change settings going from the batter to a fielder as the play developed.

AV mode. Apeture priority will give you the best results but if you were using your 100-400 you will be limited at f/4 of course.

+1 , you may have to adjust your ISO to keep the SS where you want it.

and allways keep the sun good i your back. this way you dont get real big shadows on faces and such. the sun no exactly straight will cast a lot of weird shadows! keep that in mind
