This doesn't fit any of the Canon specific forums so I thought I would post it here.

I've wanted a 'good' compact digital camera for some time. This is for me for the several times that I don't really want to carry a large camera but need some shots, as well as for my wife. She really won't use my SLR cameras and she is often the only parent at events that would be nice to capture.

I've balked to date at getting any of the attached lens digital P&S cameras for a few reasons:
1. I don't like tiny sensor DOF and noise characteristics. I need ISO800 and I want ISO1600.
2. I hate zoom via button controller as I can never get quite the focal length I want this way.
3. I don't really like composing by LCD, though I might be able to compromise on this and I know my wife doesn't care.
4. I need RAW format for my workflow....though the LX3 and G series Canons meet this need.
5. I need a snappy autofocus for candids etc.

When the Oly EP-1 came out I took notice. It was really an intersting approach but I held off for two reasons. First, I need an integral flash for my wife so she can use the thing in low light P&S mode. Second, the reports on AF speed had me leery.

Then the Panny GF-1 was announced and I decided to jump in despite the high cost. I got one with the 14-45 zoom for my wife's birthday. I'll give her the 20/1.7 for Christmas.

I could only play with it at work today because this is going to be a gift so there will be no pixel peeping tests for you here. My impressions:

1. The size is nice. This is not a pocket camera even with the prime but it will fit in my wife's purse unlike a 5D + 24-105L.

2. The LCD is excellent and almost makes up for no viewfinder. (not really....;))

3. AF performance is snappy. This is not an action tracking monster like my
1D3, but that isn't what I bought it for. What it does do is attain one shot focus fast and release the shutter.

4. IQ looks nice. I did pixel peep a couple ISO800 and ISO1600 shots and I'd call 800 good for prints and 1600 fine for the web.

5. Handling is nice. I love having a true zoom and focus rings (zoom ring is backwards though :() and the fit and finish are very good for a compact camera.

This is all just first blush playing with the camera for a bit. I'd say overall this micro 4:3 concept makes an excellent companion camera for someone who wants high quality and function for times that an SLR feature set isn't required and SLR size is definitely not desired.

Nice to hear, I've been thinking about the GF1 with a 20mm f1.7 instead. I'm waiting for Canon to make their version and/or price to go down so I can upgrade from the Oly 420 to something like the GF1.

Lets see some pics.

I've been thinking of a GF-1 + 20mm combo too. Looking forward to see some pics!

I ordered the 20mm too but that item isn't shipping as a standalone yet. I had to start with the zoom as this is a gift, and if I gave my wife a prime lens camera for her birthday she might start to suspect the gift wasn't really for her.

I mostly photograph people, the huge industrial factory I work at isn't my usual topic.

Here are a couple from the wide and the long end of the zoom. The second one is ISO 400 and it is essentially noise free when peeped.

How do you like the ergonomics? I thought about the Oly with a 17mm f2.8 as well but no flash, slower AF, slower lens (not that well reviewed on dpreview) has me thinking twice. So I thought the 20mm f1.7 would be a better option. I think dpreview rates this lens highly as well.

The ergonomics are good for a small camera. The thing doesn't grip in the hand like a 1D body, but it is not fiddly. I'll have to use it a while to really get a feel. You know how it is with a new camera that is so different. Everything is laid out differently.

In one way it is better than a Rebel because the dial can be used to set aperture and shutter speed by pressing it.

Time for some peeping. I shot these in RAW and processed them in LR. Here is an old turbo cutaway that's been on a cabinet in my office for years. First is ISO800 which I think is quite clean and very usable.

Next are ISO1600 and then ISO3200. ISO 1600 is OK, little noisy but I could make this work with some NR and futzing. I don't think I would ever use that 3200 setting.

Overall these results are what I was looking for. I have to have a functional ISO800 because I know I can shoot indoors at f/2.8 and ISO800 a lot. ISO1600 is nice to have and I'll have to try this on some real subjects and get some prints made to see how it really works out.

Hmmm, similar ballpark as my Oly. I can take usable ISO 800.
