I just got a used 70-200/4 IS L lens. It is really noisy when I turn IS on. Is that normal? I used 70-200 2.8 IS before. It was quite like hell. The seller claimed this lens is only 1 month old. It looks so new but the noise bothers me a lot. Any thoughts? Thanks.

This is exactly what I went through six months ago. The IS noise bothered me so much, I sold the lens within the first month of buying it brand new.

That and the off-white color..!

I've turned quite a bit towards primes since then, and never regretted it.

Thank you for reply. I am just kind of shocked. I used 70-200 2.8 IS. It was a old lens. but the IS was so quite that I couldn't even notice. I don't know why IS system is so laud on 70-200/4. It is just annoy.

I shoot airplanes, that's the reason why it doesn't bother me!

Please, answer me this: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=748308

I bought a 70-200 f4 IS lens new about eight months ago.
The IS is almost silent on it.

This sounds like mine. I have 24-105is,and also used 70-200 2.8 IS, I couldn't even notice the IS on both of them. The 70-200 4/is is so laud. However it works just fine so far. I don't know if the noise is normal...............

Until someone mentioned it sometime last year, I never noticed the noise on mine. Unless I am in a completely quiet room, I don't hear it, which is 99.9% of the time.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

My 70-200 f/4 IS has the loudest IS of all the IS lenses I've owned (24-105, 100L Macro, 70-200 f/2.8 IS, etc). That said, it doesn't really bother me--I can't say I notice it much.

18-55 < 17-55 < 24-105 < 70-200 - yes, it's quite loud. You should be worried if it's silent.

My 70-200 f/4 L IS is louder than any of the other IS lenses I own or have owned. The sound doesn't bother me in the slightest. The IS is rock-steady and the optics are great on this lens.

My 70-200 f/4 IS is pretty loud as well. I agree with Obtong, it doesn't bother me at all. It's super sharp and really steady. I love this lens!

I am on my third copy.
They all sound different.
I think it's normal.
