Took the new 15mm out back to test it against the Tokina 10-17mm both on the 5D.

I expected a hands down knock out, but the results are very interesting.

Couple caveats:

1) I have my Tokina currently Taped (gaffed) at 14mm as that is how I shoot it in the water with my 1D lately. I cant find my tape sooooo long story short, this is a 14mm to 15mm comparison. I will redo it as soon as I find my tape:cool:

2) I did not find this out until it was already to dark so I could not reshoot but.... The Canon 15mm back-focuses about a inch or less so these comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt.

When I reshoot I will

1) get some nicer light
2) verify focus is identical on both
3) verify the Tokina is at exactly 15mm

Both shots at F 7.1 (my main setting when shooting fish)

I have not done it perfect, in fact I suck at this, but the Tokina is surprisingly competent on Full frame, at 14mm too!

My friend kept his 10-17 when moving from a 40D to a 5d mk2, he loves it.

Looks like a knockout comparison to me for sharpness in corners, but the canon is not known as the best in that class either. I think the sigma has better reviews.
