Does a screen protector help with smearing? I'm constantly wiping off the screen from smudges. But I love my 40D. Thanks!!

I just got my first pair of glasses that I didn't think I needed. I apologize to anybody in the past year that I said their pictures were out of focus lol.

nope, it just protects it from scratches...but the screen can be replaced easily so no need for the screen protector. I also constantly wipe off the screen....it gets annoying but have to get used to it.

Hi. I use a giottos screen protector on my LCD. It still smears...but I just like the "security" of having extra protection. This is what I have: http://www.adorama.com …info=screen+protector+40D (external link)

Hope that helps a bit.

It doens't help a thing against smearing.
I have a GGS protector and i'm not sure but i think it even makes it worse.

The hard plastic protectors that fit over the screen (nikon, sony, ...) are much better for this, but akaik they don't exist for the 40D (or any other canon).

I have two brand new 3.5" protectors listed here for $6.50 each. Nothing helps with noise goo, but I would rather constantly be wiping off a $6 cover than to order a $15 part from Canon and install it, making sure no dust gets in there. I also don't know what this involves on the 7D since they supposedly installed yet something else between the screen and the actual LCD to help with viewing angles and bright situations.

Yes, I have experience doing this, I have replaced back covers, top covers, etc before. It isn't too bad, the top cover was worse and took quite some time. But you have to do it in a pretty clean environment, using a blower just before installation, etc. A $6 stiff good quality static protector is easier to deal with and cheaper.

You do know that the thing you're protecting is a built-in hard plastic protector? It's cheaply replaceable. So you're actually spending money on a screen protector protector.

I know. Had one replaced on a sony a200 once and a colleague has had his replaced just a few weeks ago (5D MKii). Both my old sony and his have dust behind the screen and both replacements were done by professional service centers.

This isn't something that should be generalized, I know, but why take a chance? For 6$ on a +600$ piece of equipment (in the case of a 40D)?

the thing you see on your LCD is already a protector. if that get's scratched you can always buy one from canon for $15 and change it yourself. AFAIK, giottos is something like $20 so for sure the original canon is still cheaper.

Wow! $20! I think I'd want to put a protector on it if it's that expensive!

There are many good protector options lower than the price of the replacement part from Canon, and are easier to replace than the factory screen. I think the rule should be that if you are going to spend more than $10 for a screen protector, then just forget it and order a replacement from Canon and store it away somewhere. If you are going to go under $10, then "you've made a good deal", in the words of Howie.

Glad you're happy with it:p

As far as the screen goes, I never put anything on it, but I wear a cotton T-Shirt when I shoot, and I wipe it off. I've never scratched a screen.

What do you guys use to clean off the smears on the LCD? Glass cleaner or what?
