Hey guys,

I was wondering if you guys could chime in where the light source is coming from in these two examples?

1.) Just the neck shot (1st photo on top) - http://www.flickr.com …eautifulstory/3915563490/ (external link)

2.) http://www.flickr.com …in/set-72157601253811584/ (external link)

Thanks in advance,
Laura

Think of it as a lighting quiz. I guessed that a single beauty dish was used in each shot. In the first, it's camera left and same height as the model, with some spill allowed to hit the background. In the second, it's camera right from above, and possibly a reflector was used to add light to her upper chest. Seem like reasonable guesses?

Cameras: 1DX, 1D4, 20D, 10D, S90, G2
Lenses: Canon 10-22mm, 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, 300mm f2.8L IS, 200mm f2L IS, 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.2L, 1.4x TC, 2x TC, 500D macro, Zeiss 21mm
Lighting: 580EX, Elinchrom 600 RX's, D-Lite 4's, ABR800, 74" Eli Octa, 100cm/70cm DOs, Photoflex Medium Octa and reflectors, PW's, Lastolite Hilite, Newton Di400CR bracket

I'd agree with that. The best way to figure these kinds of things out is to look at the shadows and where they fall. That will tell you the relative position.

Another thing to look at is the shadow fall off. If the transition from light to shadow is fast and abrupt, then either the light is fairly close to the model, or the light is more direct without much diffusion. If the light is super soft, then it's probably either further from the model or the light is going through some type of large diffusion like a softbox or octabox.

The last thing to look for are catchlights. You wont see it in all pictures, but when they're there, they tell stories.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your inputs, Steve & Geek Chic Photography!

butugly - I would ask the photog, but it doesn't look like he/she responds. I'm sure it's because they get bombarded with comments.
