Jim....Sorry to hear about your encounter with the dermatologist. I hope everything is okay (aside from the holes in your head).

I've recently become much less cavalier about the sun. I'm using sun block and wearing hats most of the time now when outdoors. (If you haven't heard, we get a lot of sun here.)

Thanks, Tom. It looks worse than it is. The Dermatologist froze 6 places about 10 days ago and biopsied 3 more. Those came back as basal cell skin cancers and thus had to be removed. He did that last Monday...scraped them first and then burned them with an electric tool...I had lots of novocaine so didn't feel anything. Everything is fine now but I can scare old ladies and little kids for at least another week or so ;-)a

I hear you on the hats and sunblock...I have a Tilley UV rated wide brim hat that I wear all the time when I am outdoors...I can't use sunblock as my skin reacts to it and it does worse that the UV rays :-(

Did I mention that "it is tough to get older (more mature :)) but it sure beats the alternative?"

My skin cancer issues came from years of running & training for marathons :-) Way too much sun exposure.

Yup, that would scare just about anyone. Fortunately, my sedentary existence kept me out of the sun, and I don't appear to have any issues (except for one flaky spot on my right eyebrow).

My brother did have melanoma on his back, so his experience has made me just a little more cautious than I otherwise might be. Fortunately, he's out of the woods with that. Lois is absolutely paranoid about the sun, so her caution largely influences any desire I might have to get too much of the stuff. She even takes her walks at 5:30 in the morning to avoid it, so that's when I take my bike ride.

You and Lois are doing it right. When I walk now it is late in the day (8PM or so) and always with a hat. In the winter time I just back up the time to 5PM and again grab the hat.

My cool photo was made with my new toy...an iPhone 4s :-) Great for self-portraits :-)

Impressive!! I'm going to skip the 4S. I have the 4, and if I really want that camera, I have an iPad3, which has the same camera, I'm told. As for self-portraits, I have too much love for my fellow man to inflict my face on them any more than I already do.

I was considering the iPad3 but I am waiting to see if the rumors on the iPad3 7.5" model are true? The smaller size really appeals to me for traveling.

I know that eventually there will be a replacement for the 4S, and if it really offers something useful, I'll get one. I've reached my 2-year anniversary, so I'm not locked in to AT&T. I've been looking at switching to Verizon, but want to be perfectly satisfied with their coverage before committing to two years with anyone again. Actually, it feels good knowing I could call and cancel service without penalty, not that I would.

We switched to Verizon last year and I am much happier with it. Much.

Jim, glad the spots were nothing worse as it was bad enough to be basal cell. I had some of those same spots removed from my back when I was 19 years old and it wasn't fun because there was no laser technology. White old me living in Huntington Beach... it cannot tell you how many sunburns I got as a kid so I watch my skin like a hawk. And I nag my Aaron to death about sunscreen..... but even he has already had several bad burns. Stupid mother told him to lay out in the sun 2 summers ago so he wouldn't be so white. The kid fried like bacon.

Well, red hair, freckles, doesn't take a rocket scientist. . . .

But I stray.

Sarah, Brandon's wife, got a very red 1st degree sunburn on Saturday taking Annie to the zoo. She had SPF 70 on and reapplied several times over a 2 hour period, but the Utah sun is too much for her. She was completely burned. I told her to wear a hat and take an umbrella, but she's a little more vain than I am. At least she didn't blister.

Jim, you and Elaine will never slow down because it would age you and you won't like it. As I told you, my parents slowed down so much after they retired. They should have never stopped working. They really didn't have the savings to do much of vacationing on a fixed income, so they were slowly getting less active. I don't plan on stopping when I finally retire. I need to see all the grandkids like you do on your off time. Annie's little brother is coming in October, so I will be quite happy and busy.

Both grandkids came tonight with badly sunburned backs, shoulders and arms. I was so mad & I told Carrie as much. Grrrr.

I might not be very available for a couple of days as I have 4-5 kids here this week. Pray for me. :)

Take pictures of it all, Mo, you might need documentation. I feel badly for them. Teach Aaron to wear a sunshirt. Ken and all 4 boys now wear those shirts before going outside to play. It's not only because they are as pale as could be or for religious reasons, they just hate sunburns. And the shirts are not ugly looking. They are usually high tech sunblock and form-fitting so they may make the kid happier than a loose fitting tee-shirts. My sons, even the youngest one, will remember to put it on and sunscreen. They've been burned so much during scout stuff. I never let that happen if I am with them. Jared burned the top of his head and the top of his feet, but his body was fine. I told him to keep his hat on, but he didn't have it while he was boating. And he reapplied the stuff on his feet regularly, but he was in the water all day for 4 days. Long story, but when I'm not with them, I have to trust they are doing the right thing. Takes years of training and bad sunburns, unfortunately.

Take care of the boys, Mo. I bought some Aloe gel from the pharmacy. That worked very well. Ice works, too.

Happy Monday All! Busy week shaping up for me.

Mo, I entered in the G-Series contest on Sunday. Had a great "In the Box" idea :-)

Just had breakfast with one of my former students. She's so adorable and it was fun to spend 3 hours talking at IHOP. I don't feel like I am old and have lots of advice to give, but for some reason, people listen to me. :)
