Saw on the CNN website that NASA is set to crash the LCROSS probe into the Moon at 7:31 am ET on Friday, October 9, 2009.

Be interesting to see if anyone is able to capture any photos of the impact plume. If you do, post your pictures here.

Yeah i just read something about it, they said with just a simple telescope it would be viewable. Maybe some of the guys with telephoto's will be able to get some good shots.

I just read somewhere (external link) that we would need a 10" or larger telescope.

Any idea if my little ETX90 would be powerful enough if I am using Prime Focus with a 40D?

Probably not... I'll be attempting on my 8in SCT and a friends 10in Dob. I'll use the T1i and he's using a CCD.

My sister actually works @ Northrop Grumman (company that built the LCROSS), she will have a real time view of the crash. I'll see if she can get any photos of the crash.

I think its a stupid idea to crash anything into the moon what happens if it were to go wrong,????????????.Nobody wants or needs to know if its possible to live on the moon,Not a tree hugger or anything but gets my back up when scientists go experimenting on things without good reason.

What would go wrong? That they miss the moon? Or that they impact the moon so hard that the moon breaks in two?

Remember that the moon has been bombarded again, and again, and again for millions of years. But analysis of the dust etc that gets thrown up will give a lot of information about it. It isn't so easy to send a huge laboratory to the moon.

And you're the one to determine if it's a good reason?
