I already posted this on FM, but thought I'd share here. I think the key to the 7D's AF is understanding what modes and CF settings make sense. Anyway, I unpacked my 7D just before lunch, and headed for the nearest park. Nobody was flying, but I did find a few geese swimming to test out obstacles coming in front of a target. The only adjustment I made to the 7D's default AF settings if CFIII-3 (per ruhikant's suggestion), I set that to 1. I set the cam for AI servo, AF point expansion, and then tracked a goose swimming behind another. The sequence is as follows, and is completely flawless (these are 50% crops). I had the AF point on the goose's neck, and had AF in operation the whole time. I did another sequence where I walked while locked onto a goose, and let a tree pass between me. Same results - flawless tracking of the intended subject. My walking caused enough camera shake that the shots have a little blur at 50% so I won't post them - don't want to hear the BS from the trolls.

These have had 0 postprocessing other than resize, and yes I know I accidentally had +2/3 EC. The point is the AF tracking

Impressive.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Proof is in the pudding. Nice examples and report. This is evidence enough that some of the AF complaints might be more user-error (for not setting up the AF properly) than the camera.

I've already stated that the first day with my 7D, hardly any image was sharp. I had to reconsider and think about how to use its features, as it's different compared to my 40D.
The next day virtually every image was sharp.
