Hey all,

I'll be shooting an all-day event on Saturday and am comfortable with the daytime portion, but would like some advice on the nighttime portion.

I have an off-shoe cord, so I can hold the flash with my left hand off to the side and above the subject. Should I use any sort of light modifier? Maybe an index card or something to bounce the flash off? Or should I just nuke 'em?

Flash is going to be a 430EX, may even use ETTL.

what distance are you going to be working from? Small modifiers are nice if you are working within a few feet, beyond that might as well go naked.

Yes, what distance are we talking about? Any change there is a ceiling to bounce off of?

I'm gonna be roaming around taking pics of people having a good time using my Sigma 30 1.4, so I'll be right up in their faces.

No ceiling, it's all outdoors. I don't have time to get one of those diffusers, is an index card my best option? I've got access to cardstock, I could make something bigger than an index card.

You could try building this: http://super.nova.org/DPR/DIY01/ (external link)
It's much better than an index card.
Or ABBC.

Ah, perfect, I think I'll make something like that. What's "ABBC?"

A better bounce card. Basically a cardboard for craft foam version of a lumiquest bounce card. They work nicely and you cant beat the price :)
