This is my official duck shot to satisfy the POTN rule for initiating new equipment. Darkness was approaching very quickly, so this was shot at ISO 800 from a distance of around 150 feet with a Canon 400/5.6 lens on my new 7D.

I used DPP for the RAW conversion because I found that the Adobe profiles for the Canon 7D are not ready for prime time yet -- they produce blurry images with lot of color artifacts besides the CA fringing. My solution ws to use DPP to create a TIFF image and then import it into ACR for additional processing to clean up noise that DPP never seems to handle very well. After importing into Photoshop, I used Neat Image to do some final noise cleanup and sharpening. The image shown here is a cropped portion that has been rescaled to 25% of original.

Nice couple of ducks there Bill. And good use of PP'ing.

I'm currently seriously looking at the pros and cons of upgrading my 50D to the 7D. I reckon my finances might just be able to cope with and posts like yours keep tipping the balance.....:)

Matt.

Great shot Bill. That sounds like a good workflow.

I got out of the habit of processing every RAW file and now I just use either Bridge or IrfanView to preview and delete the bad ones and open the best for processing. Hve you tried to open one of those RAW's in Irfan yet?

Looking good, so although early days whay are your impressions of the 7D

Because of the weather, I have not really had a good opportunity to give it a good workout, but my early impressions are that it is a rather amazing camera -- BUT, it did take a bit of adjustment on my part (along with a few in the camera settings) to feel like I was starting to get the most out of it. I still fumble around a bit and am still wondering about the usefulness (for my purposes) of some of the bells and whistles. One of my biggest hurdles was realizing that the beta version of 7D profiles and settings in the Adobe RAW conversion engine which is used in DNG Converter, Camera RAW, and Lightroom is not yet up to the task of processing the images well. That part, which is not really a part of the camera, is a big disappointment to me since my preferred workflow is to go straight to ACR. Since it is still in beta testing, there are no shooting styles (I do not use them anyway -- I shoot a color checker and build my own profiles for different lighting conditions, but there are still a few other problems to be worked out by Adobe). So, I switched to DPP, but I do not like the "salt and pepper" graininess that their RAW converter produces. The camera is great and the high ISO works quite well and I think that even ISO 800 and possibly 1600 can be used for bird images. I also figured out that my XTi is a darn good camera for low ISO use and I might have had my expectations at an unreasonable level because of the euphoria of getting a "big-boy" camera. I have seen some threads by the pixel-peepers where there has been some angst over various types of fixed pattern noise with many self-proclaimed experts offering their expertise, but I have to say that I have not experienced any of those noise problems even when pushing an image that has accidentally been underexposed a bit. Overall, with a more sober look at the camera, I would definitely buy it again and would heartily recommend it to anybody wanting to upgrade.

Don't try to resist the force -- resistance is futile.

I am hoping to get some better images as I get more familiar with the camera and the weather improves.

I am not familiar with IrfanView, Mitch, but I will give it a look. My idea for using DPP for converting the RAW images came from HarveyG. Also, I have heard 50D users say that DPP works better than ACR for that camera. I sure hope that Adobe gets it together, but my impression is that Canon wants to push everybody to use their DPP software for RAW conversion.

Thanks, Judy. I am beginning to wonder if the weather will ever clear up here. It is still dark and gloomy overcast.
